A Foley catheter is also known as an indwelling catheter because it remains within the body. A Foley catheter is a rubber tube that is used to drain urine from your body. The tip of the catheter is filled with clean water to create a balloon that will help keep the catheter in place. Foley catheters can remain implanted for quite a while. A professional will insert the catheter. It is a simple procedure that is done in a matter of minutes. However, you will be responsible for your daily care.
There are several steps required to care for your Foley catheter. It is important to follow the steps daily to prevent kidney or bladder infections. The number one thing to remember to avoid any infections by washing your hands before and after your catheter care routine. Equally important is to keep the area around the catheter clean at all times, clean your skin and catheter after every bowel movement as well. You must keep the level of your urine bag below your bladder; if not the urine can back up into the bladder and cause an infection.
Only wear cotton underwear in order to allow your genital area to remain dry and breathe. Drink at least eight glasses of water, milk, or juices a day. The amount may be modified by your doctor, if so follow his or her advice over any Internet information you receive. Try to drink even when you are not feeling thirsty.
Try not to consume too much caffeine. Caffeine will cause you to produce more urine and lose too much bodily fluid. Be careful how you handle the tubing. Do not walk on it, or pull on it as it can cause bleeding. Keep the tubing curled in your hand when you walking, or pin the tubing to your clothing. When in bed make sure you hang the bag on the frame of the bed, you don't want the tubing to curl or tangle.
