A catheter is the rubber tubing used to release urine from the body to a urinary waste bag that is attached to the outside the body. The Foley catheter is run through the urethra in a female and balloon will hold the catheter in the bladder. Since Foley catheters remain in place for a long time, the patient is responsible for its maintenance.
• The supplies a female should have on hand are soap, a washcloth and some tape or a strap to properly administer self care for your Foley catheter
• Have your supplies ready
• Wash your hands with soap and water
• Carefully inspect the area where the catheter protrudes from the body and look for redness, pus, or blood. You may need a mirror to be able to do this. (If pus, blood, or drainage is found call your health care professional)
• Thoroughly wash the area surrounding the catheter with soap and water including the entire pubic area
• Wash the catheter twice daily but do not pull on the tube
• Secure or fasten the strap or tape to your leg, this is what will keep the catheter in place.
• Wash the strap or change the tape if it becomes dirty.
• Ensure that your drainage bag is always below your bladder to make sure the urine drains properly.
• Make sure the tubing does not twist or kink
• When the drainage bag is half full it is time to empty it.
• Get a new drainage bag every month.
