Catheter Types

The two basic designs of urinary catheters are intermittent and indwelling urinary catheter. The indwelling catheter remains in the body. An intermittent catheter, also called a Robinson catheter is not designed to remain inside the body. The Robinson (intermittent) catheter is just for short time use. It is either non-coated or hydrophilic (water) coated.

The indwelling catheter used for urinary/ bladder control is called a Foley catheter. This catheter is named after a Boston surgeon by the name of Frederick Foley who designed the piece in the 1930s. The design is simply that of a flexible rubber (either natural rubber or silicone) tube that passes through the urethra on its way to the bladder.

There are two channels called lumens on the catheter which serve different purposes. One of the channels remains open on either end. Its function is to allow urine to flow out from the body and empty into a urine collection bag. The other channel or lumen has a value on the outside, and it connects to a balloon. The balloon is filled with a saline solution which remains inside the body and is responsible for keeping the Foley catheter in place.

Coudé (French for bend) catheters have a curved tip that is specifically designed to easily pass through the curvature within the prostatic urethra.  Hematuria catheters are Foley catheters which are designed to detect blood in the urine. External, Texas, urisheat, also known as condom catheters is a type of catheter used for men who are incontinent. The benefit of this kind of catheter is that it carries less risk of infection than the standard Foley catheter.

Catheters are usually 3.3 mm to 9.3mm which is big enough to allow the urine to go through. Larger ones are necessary for thick or bloody urine with a lot of sediment.
