There are different catheters for different medical diseases. Urinary catheters are used for urinary and bladder issues. A catheter is a rubber, or silicone tube that is placed in the bladder to direct the urine out of the body through its long tube. The urine will empty into a bag that is placed below the bladder on the outside of the body. A catheter may be used for a short time or can be used indefinitely.
There are two types of catheters. When it is used for a short term, the catheter is called an intermittent catheter. This catheter can be used due to a bladder stone which is blocking the passage of urine through the bladder or there is some other reason why the passage of urine is blocked. Emergency personnel may insert a catheter to monitor the flow of urine of a person who is recovering from surgery or is unconscious. An intermittent catheter is used to prepare for certain surgeries such as a hysterectomy.
Sometimes catheters are required for long periods of time, in which case the catheter is called an indwelling catheter. This type of catheter is used when a person has neuropathic bladder disorder, where the nerves of the bladder have been damaged and the individual no longer has bladder control. Similarly, a catheter is used for people who experience bladder incontinence and do not properly respond to medication or other procedures. Most people prefer the indwelling catheter because it is easier to manage and there is less pain involved. However, if the condition is one that requires a really long period of using catheters, doctors will use the intermittent catheter to reduce the risk of infection.
When catheters are required for long periods of time, the patient is taught how to clean and monitor their own catheter care this is called self-catheterization. Catheters can allow bacteria into the body. When this happens the patients end up with urinary tract infections and therefore it is important to clean the catheter that extends outside of the body as well as the skin surrounding the catheter daily.
