Catheter Care is necessary when you are wearing a catheter

The urinary tract can become contaminated easily when using a catheter because germs can move easily in moist areas.  The germs can move up the catheter tubing and cause a urinary tract infection.  Therefore, you need to wash the area around the catheter, while also washing the exposed part of the catheter that is proximal to the urinary meatus.

If you are in a hospital or nursing home environment, the nurses will either do the catheter care themselves with a cleansing solution, or they may instruct you to do your own catheter care with mild soap and water. Nursing staff is trained to cleanse from just under the clitoris downward. You will do the same if you are doing your own catheter care. Never wash from back to front, because you will carry the germs from the back to the front where they can move into the urinary tract. You should do catheter care at least once a day, and preferably twice daily - once in the morning and once at bedtime - and after each bowel movement.

Be sure that when you are giving yourself catheter care that you don’t pull or tug at the catheter. Hold the catheter taut so that you can clean around the tubing, but just don’t pull it too much where it will cause pain or possibly become dislodged and come out. The catheter should be held in place with either tape securing it, or you may use a catheter band which fits around the leg and has Velcro.

The catheter bag should always be below the waist so that urine can flow and not flow back into the bladder.  It is good practice to empty the drainage bag when it is about half-full. This goes for the leg bag too, if you wear one.  If you wear a leg bag, be sure to change to a regular drainage bag and secure it so that it will drain properly.  Don’t let your drainage bag rest on the floor because staph germs can move up the catheter bag and onto the catheter and into your urinary system.
